Vitamin supplements may do more harm than good. .. . take it with caution!

There is no need for most people to take vitamin supplements and some may even be linked to a higher risk of dying in older women, according to a study published Monday in the United States.

Iron stood out among supplements as a particular concern, while calcium appeared to be linked to lower death risk, said the study in the Archives of Internal Medicine, a journal of the American Medical Association.

Vitamins could lead to higher death rates in women according to the study. Starting at the age of 60-years old vitamin users have a 2.4% higher chance of dying.

Researchers believe MultivitaminsB6iron, zinc, copper, folic acid, and iron are to blame for the increase in earlier mortality rate.

A long term use of high concentration of nutrients found in vitamins can be toxic in higher amounts, especially when consumed for a long time, as some of these accumulate to body.

It is better to take vitamin supplements with caution and if necessary just for a short period of time.
